Good day for taking off from Morrone
A good day for taking off from Morrone

Morrone is another one of those convenient Corbetts that are in superb locations and make for excellent viewpoints. On a clear day, your effort to climb this hill will be rewarded with 360°-panoramic-views of the Deeside peaks. There are good paths throughout here making Morrone even more attractive – especially to people new to hillwalking.

You start your walk in the car park at the duck pond on the southwestern edge of Braemar . Pass the pond and the houses to the right, and shortly after, you reach a fork where you take the left branch.

Continue uphill, and soon, you come across a viewpoint . Ignore the path to the right and continue straight ahead. Finally, you reach some houses, from where a path to the right leads uphill .

Take this path and continue up the slopes, where you soon pass the steepest section . Since the gradient is relatively gentle and you are on a good path, there is no real exposure.

Follow the path further up the hill; eventually, the gradient will ease as you emerge on the plateau. From here, you can already see the comms mast. Head straight towards it, and you have reached your goal of the day: the summit of Morrone .

There are fantastic views all around: To the North, you see Braemar with Ben Avon rising in the background, clearly recognisable by its tors on the top. To the South are the Glenshee Munros and to the East the White Mounth Munros, from which the most famous one is Lochnagar.

After enjoying the views, follow the path leading south down the hill. Stay on this path until you reach a fork , where you turn left. It’s a straightforward walk down the hill from now on, and soon, you reach a minor road . Take a left turn here, follow the road, and pass a golf course with its clubhouse to the left. After the clubhouse, you find a footpath to the left leading up a hill through woodland.

Follow this footpath, and you will soon pass the houses again, where you took the uphill path to Morrone earlier. Retrace your steps from there to the viewpoint and eventually back to the duck pond car park.
